Rap and Hip Hop: A legitimate music genre or self destructive noise?

I use to be a fan of hip hop and rap music way back in the 1980's. Back then, a person actually needed to have talent in order to be called a rap "artist". Over the last twenty years, the genre of music has taken a nose dive into the sewer. A rapper's credibility isn't so much about his or her ability to be a performer. It more has to do with how many times he or she has been arrested or shot.

In Oakland eight people where shot including a 1 year old infant at a video shoot for a rap video.

I can only ask the question why a 1 year old was present at a rap video shoot. Dare I say lack of parenting common sense? I get flack from the defenders of rap music, whenever I bring up stories like this. The facts however aren't on their side. Rap music is the only genre of music with most of the CD's sold or downloaded coming with a "parental advisory" label. Some have foolishly tried to use the race card as a defense of today's rap and hiphop music. They've said that if a person is white and attacks rap and hip hop as not being music, they must be racists. On the flip side, the defenders have called blacks who don't like today's garbage known as rap as "sellouts" for speaking ill of it. Facts are still what they are. Hiphop and Rap aren't the only genre of music that blacks perform and listen to. I have never heard any violence related to the genres of Jazz, R&B, Blues, Reggae, Gospel and Soul. Maybe it's just me noticing this. I have to wonder out off all the young black men in prison, selling drugs and committing murder, what are the percentages of them who listen to Jazz, R&B, Blues, Reggae, Gospel and Soul? I would wager the percentages are next to none. There is a reason why parents who actually care about their children don't want their kids listening to rap music. Let this story out of Oakland serve as yet another example in a long list of examples why that is.

You are correct about today's hip hop and rap. It's not like the old school rap we heard from the 70s through the 90s. Guys like the late Joe Tex to MC Hammer had talent. Thugs like Snoop Dog and others ruined the music industry.

Very true. The Fat Boys, Run DMC, Houdini, Das Effects, Kurtis Blow, Jam Master Jay, LL Cool Jay etc. That truly was the golden era of hip hop and rap. The music was so pure that the only battles that took place among the young people were breaking dancing competitions. I really do miss the good ol days.

I remember when Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates defending the garbage and lyrics in rap music, saying that it is part of the "black culture" that dates back a long time ago. When did I ever hear Gates sing in a hip-hop, rap style? Never.

Last I checked earlier rap music dates back in the mid to late 1970s starting with Charlie Daniels "Devil Went Down To Georgia", but that's not considered rap, it's country. Debra Harry (Blondie) "Rapture", still they did not call it rap. First rap song I heard was "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugar Hill Gang. I never heard any profane language in that song.

Fat boys Charlie daniels and Debra harry are not preludes to rap music. Rhyming in rhythm goes back as early as the twenties with the Memphis Jugband. Dont forget about the Last Poets in the sixties.

I agree that now most of the current rap music is bullcrap.

rap is nigger music. It's cRAP. You can tell the simian brain likes it. I have played rap to monkeys and they like it also. I think blacks and monkeys have the same taste in music. The simian ( negro ) brain responds to mindless drivel backed by jungle beats.

Rap, Hip Hop, and BET have contributed to the self destructive attitude of many young people. America has become a cesspool of ignorance and stupidity, just look at the garbage that comes on network and cable television. BET broadcasts trash during the week, then try to clean up with religious programs on Sunday. Intelligence and common sense are things of the past.

Wow Anon, now tell us how you really feel....

Sadly there are still idiots like you who hide their animus and deep seeded feelings. Fortunately there are people like you who remind us all that garbage like you are still around after 400 years.

It's just to sad that, over time, love and peace can fade from the heart and mind. Yet, over time, hate seems to endure...

I bet he is a republican like you.The only people who listen to stupid rap these days are those little short fat Mexican men.The ones that are breeding them little White girls in CA like its going out of style with those little mixed breed brown gang race babies.Between the Mexicans flooding across the border and the ones breeding little White whores with mixed brown babies I can see why they predict hispanics to be the majority by 2030.

So many rap singers are/were Muslims singing degrading words about women. When they sang about Muslim women, they bragged about the burkas as being so holy. Black rappers are so sad as Arabs cant stand them. Busta Rhyms was forced to stop selling his record called Arab Money. Music is forbidden in Islam. Muslim leaders allow it right now to pull the youth into islam, when they take over America/West, music will stop unless it is Islamic about Allah.

It is a shame that they dont read, as Blacks are call zurkas-dirty niggas and less than a donkey's penis. A famous saying in Islam is Sawwad Allah Wajhuhu, which means "May Allah blacken your face!" As in Hinduism, the blacker you are the worst human you are and not allowed to marry the blacker. Wake Up AMerica!

Black Uhuru, what a great group they were with Michael Rose, some of the best reggae ever:

Bob and those others were real good too, I saw Peter Tosh in concert now, they have music called Dancehall, they say Yellowman influenced that and they say some of it is kind of like rap to reggae music as rap is to soul. Something like that.

Rap and hip hop beats are very much in demand by the young people nowadays. The young generation of today's era love to burn the dance floor with such beats. These beats are very much versatile in nature just like the rap beats. The rap and hip hop tracks are very much popular all over the world because these beats have been developed from the hip culture, which has lots of bass and treble

hip hop beats
beats
custom beats
trap beats
rap and hip hop beats
hip hop tracks
beats for sale

This so called "music" is nothing more than a bunch of Lazy Mothafuckas taaking the lowest possible road to mass hyponosis.
The sad part is that people are dumb enough to support total bullshit and think it's art.
Scratching beats on a turntable does not make you a musician, practicing an instrument over many years does. Just more dumbing down of America.
The stupidest fuckin song I have ever heard, Bad Bitches is my Biggest Fuckin Problem, is an insult to anyone who ever completed second grade.
The sad part is that there are enough people out there to support this crap, and make it lucrative to these scam artists.
America is over as a world leader, we are just way too stupid
