A key reason why the economy will not improve under an Obama administration.
This is way to easy to explain. The only people that will have a hard time grasping this are Obama supporters. They're is no way a country can "conserve it's way out of a recession". To do that would be like trying to clap with one hand. As a nation's economy starts to grow, it will naturally start to consume more energy to met the demand of it's growth. As airlines add more flights to it's schedule due to higher demand, the additional planes will consume more jet fuel. As stores order more goods to meet the demand of customers, more goods will have to be shipped to those stores. That means more trucks will have to be used, and that also means more diesel fuel used to fuel those trucks. Follow me on this. OPEC just cut oil production twice this month by 2.5 million barrels. Because demand is so weak due to the economy, the prices are continuing to fall regardless of the cuts. If the economy was to turn around under Obama, the price of oil would sky rocket back up to $150 a barrel even faster then before due to the supply being cut. It was the price of gas earlier this year that caused people to slow down their spending, and that caused the beginning of the economic downturn. The housing market mess just accelerated it. This is the kicker. If the economy starts to rebound and gas prices shot back up to record territory, this is what "President Obama" is going to have to tell the American people.
Like I said, An Obama presidency is just the 2nd term of Carter, and history does repeat itself.

They don't want the economy to grow. If the private sector flourishes, then the government can't take over.
So it makes perfect sense for them to derail the economy as much as possible.
Every since the Nixon administration, every president after him would always say that we could no longer depend on foreign oil and we must create our own alternatives.
We have enough oil here in the U.S. to produce our own fuel and to import to other countries, and the technology to create bio-fuel and solar, and wind power.
We may as well drill off-shore or in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. But always, we're still going to buy oil from foreign countries.
What's wrong with this picture? How many times has each President said that we're no long depending on foreign oil. That's like Bush Sr. saying "Read my lips: no new taxes".

Yes and no vegas art guy. Your right that liberals by nature want the government to control everything, but people vote according to their perception of the economy. That was why Carter was kicked out on his ass in 1980. They're is a reason why from 1980 to when bush finishes his term for 2008, Republicans will have controlled the white house for 20 out of 28 years. That's not fluke. I believe in part Republicans can thank Carter for that. They're simply isn't a such thing as a socialist country with strong economic growth with low taxes and low inflation. If John Kerry was elected instead of Bush four years ago, Republicans would have been in the driver's seat once their sub prime mess hit the fan. Unfortunately it's the other way around Vegas. If McCain beats Obama, McCain will be the one blammed if the economy doesn't turn around four years from now,and that could be bad news if he doesn't run for re election and Sarah Palin does run for President. I actually think it will be better for Obama to win, then let everything completely blowup on Obama, Biden and the Democrat congress. The reasoning is that they can't blame Bush or Republicans. That translates into an electoral college landslide for Palin or Jindal just like it did for Reagan in 1980. vegas

Politicians never think about alternative fuels when a barrel of oil is trading for $40 a barrel. I've noticed that the who ethanol boom has since gone bust. I also don't see T Boone Pickens on the television set either since oil prices have tanked. When oil climbs back up to $140 a barrel the issue will be revisited again. I rather our country drill for more supply then spending the next 15 years trying to find the next great "alternative". Like the saying goes "Go with what works until it works no more". Oil is proven and it's available now. I know the eccofreaks don't like it, but I don't care what they want. Our economy is driven on the premise that oil remains cheap, and I am all for that.
If Obama wins there will be no drilling. And I'm old enough (groan) to remember the big recession from Carter and the ones that followed. If Obama wins it'll be deeper and longer than the last two. For all his faults Clinton was smart enough to govern from the middle. Obama will not have to worry about it if he gets a super majority in the senate. Then we go to hell in a hand basket.
I have a feeling that people will end up with 'buyers remore' and there will be nothing they can do about it...
The prices of oil has fallen lockstep with the collapse of cheap money and the deflation of the 1982-2008 credit bubble. Real estate, stocks, metals have all fallen because the punch-bowl cheap money fueling the boom has been taken away.
Commodities boom is dead. Oil is not moving out of the $50-$75 range any time soon.
OPEC has little to no control over prices. Saudi Arabia is the only member with clout. OPEC may cut; but cash strapped Venezuela and Iran will be hard pressed to cut production.
And what about non OPEC powers such as Brazil and Russia? They will not fall in line.
The situation reminds me of the Asian Financial crisis. OPEC overestimated demand going into the collapse, and was helpless to stop the fall of oil towards $10 / barrel.

There you have one of the primary reasons why Obama is doing so well right now vegas. Voters in their 20's and 30's don't know anything about the disastrous presidency of Jimmy Carter. Even I was just a kid, but I was told all about it from my parents. Most of these young voters have no idea who Jimmy Carter is, and they know equally as much about Barack Obama. I was thinking about the comparison between Bill and Barack the other day vegas. I would gladly take four years of Bill Clinton over Barack Obama. Your absolutely right. Barack makes Bill look like a freaking CONSERVATIVE!!! Republicans regardless of what happens Tuesday are going to try to retake congress in 2010, I just hope Republicans can stop Obama and company or at least slow him down until the midterms vegas. Buyer's remorse over Carter lead to the great Ronald Reagan, This time around the buyer's remorse will lead to Sarah Palin or Bobby Jindal being ushered in.

Correct me if I am wrong kofi, but didn't OPEC just announce production cuts for the second time in a month? Supply and Demand still applies to OPEC as well. It does do my hurt proud to see Venezuela and Iran crying the blues. OPEC is in a uniquely bad situation. They definitely don't want to see the world economy spiral into a recession or worse a depression. The demand for oil could outright collapse, yet they frantically want to try and establish a bottom for oil as well. They are walking a very fine line, either way I hope they get screwed.

I don't know about Brazil, but I could see Russia honoring the cuts. Russia is in a much better financial condition then the other OPEC nations. They might go along with OPEC to try and establish a bottom knowing that they can survive in the short term if demand falls off further due to decreased supply.

Got to love the free market system. Eventually it will find a way to self correct. It did it during the bio tech bubble of the 80's, the dot com bubble of the 90's and even with the housing bubble two years ago. Kofi, most of the experts said that we would never see $2.99 gas ever again in our lifetime, yet in Missouri gas is selling at $1.85 a gallon. As you stated supply and demand will determine the overall direction of oil prices. My prediction just speaking for myself, I believe oil will get as low as $40 dollars a barrel.

So very true it's scary and then some. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. The problem with most blacks in our country is that they aren't even willing to learn the history in the first place.

Anonymous, are you black? If so why do you believe that crap! You can find writings from "so-called" Christian religious scholars (right here in the U.S.) that use and interpret the Holy Bible to say the same thing about Blacks.
First off, you should know that Islam is the largest religion in Africa. Post 615 CE Abyssinia, Islam has been the dominant religion in Africa. Thus, if the Koran depicts the black man in such a way, why is Islam the largest religion among Africans?
Try your best to answer that question without degrading Africans or African Americans...

Over half of the African people (indigenous to the continent) are Muslim. If what you imply is true, then that "MAJORITY" of Africans ARE INDEED AS STUPID AS YOU CLAIM THE KORAN IMPLIES. If your interpretation of the Koran is that Blacks are "STUPID", yet a majority of Africans embrace the religion, wouldn't that be in and of itself...STUPID???
